Pipe balloon plug vs inflatable pipe stopper vs test plug: what to specify in a Qatar, UAE or Saudi RFQ

If your Qatar, UAE or Saudi tender says "pipe balloon plug", "inflatable pipe stopper", "pneumatic pipe plug" or "inflatable sewer plug", it is usually asking for the same kind of product: a rubber plug inflated inside the pipe. The name does not tell a supplier what you need. What matters is the job. Do you need to block a line, block it and keep flow moving (bypass), or pressure-test a section? Each job points to a different plug family. Each model also has its own limits for inflation pressure and back pressure.

Reliance Trenchless publishes three inflatable plug families and their specification tables. Here is how to match the buyer's wording to the right family, and what to put in the RFQ.

Same product, different names

Across GCC tenders and supplier listings you will see inflatable pipe plug, inflatable sewer plug, pipe stopper balloon plug, pneumatic pipe plug and inflatable test plug. Apart from "test plug", these names describe how the plug works, not the job it does. So start every RFQ by stating the task, then choose the family:

  • Isolation (blocking). Multi-Size Inflatable Pipe Plugs. The MS series covers a published range of DN50–1500 (2–60″). Each model fits a range of pipe sizes, from MS 50-100 to MS 800-1500. Single-size plugs are also available for larger lines, with a published range of DN300–4000.
  • Isolation with flow diversion. The MSBP bypass series sits in its own table on the same page. It runs from MSBP 200-300 to MSBP 800-1500. Do not copy figures from a non-bypass model onto a bypass model.
  • Pipeline testing. Testing Plugs and Steam Plugs support hydraulic or air testing of pipes and sewers, checking for cracks, leaks and welding defects.

To compare all three families side by side, see the Inflatable Pipe Plugs and Testing overview.

Inflation pressure is not back pressure

This is the most common RFQ mistake. Inflation pressure is the pressure inside the plug. Back pressure comes from the pipe contents pushing on the plug. Reliance lists these as separate columns, and the limits differ by model:

  • MS (no bypass): from 3 bar inflation / 2 bar back pressure (MS 50-100, MS 70-150) down to 1.2 bar / 0.2 bar (MS 600-1200, MS 800-1500).
  • MSBP (bypass): 2 / 1, 1.5 / 0.5 or 1.2 / 0.3 bar, depending on the model.
  • HMSP high-pressure multi-size: 4 bar inflation / 2.5 bar back pressure on every row, from HMSP 100-200 to HMSP 1200-1400.
  • Testing plugs: a 4 bar series (4 bar inflation / 3 bar back pressure) and a 6 bar series (6 / 5 bar). Each series has eight models, from TP-DN150 to TP-DN1000.

Each MS, MSBP and HMSP plug comes with a pressure gauge and a 10 m air hose. Protective rubber sleeves are listed separately.

Read the testing-plug model names carefully

A testing-plug model name is not the pipe diameter. For example, TP-DN150 is listed with a product diameter of 100 mm (4 in). Send your measured inside diameter and let Reliance confirm the fit. Do not choose a model from its name.

A pipe plug is not a CIPP packer

Some buyers searching for plugs are planning a rehabilitation job. An inflatable pipe plug closes the pipe for isolation, bypass or testing. A repair packer carries repair material to a defect for a localized point repair, and it is a different product. If you are deciding between a sectional point repair and full-length CIPP lining, compare the two first. Reliance supplies point-repair products and pipe plugs. It does not supply full-length CIPP lining systems.

RFQ checklist (copy into your email)

Send this to sales@reliancetrenchless.com or WhatsApp +86 188 6774 8857:

  1. Measured inner diameter where the plug will sit (with units), plus pipe material and condition
  2. Medium in the line (sewage, stormwater, water, air, other)
  3. Task: blocking/isolation, or a pressure test. Give the test or back-pressure conditions with units.
  4. Bypass needed? If yes, say what must pass through.
  5. Access limits: manhole or entry opening, bends, insertion space
  6. Quantity for each size, and any model and source table you are already looking at
  7. Destination port or city (for example Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Dammam or Jeddah)
  8. Target on-site date
  9. Air freight? It is an option on each order. Say if the job is urgent, and sales will confirm air or sea freight for that order.
  10. Any standards, inspection documents or packing your project requires

Who coordinates GCC enquiries

Reliance's Dubai office (TH65 Alandulus, Jumeirah Golf Estate, Dubai, UAE) coordinates regional enquiries. The products are made in China, with offices in Wenzhou and Qingdao. The site lists Middle East customers in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Orders are wrapped, labelled and crated on pallets for export.

What this post does not claim

This post does not claim that stock is held in Dubai, that there is a local Gulf phone number, or that any plug suits every pressure or medium. Reliance confirms dimensions, operating limits, inspection documents, availability and delivery terms for each project.
